Oxytocin
Overview
Oxytocin is an endogenous nonapeptide hormone involved in uterine contraction, lactation, social bonding, and stress-related signalling. It is used clinically in obstetrics and is also commonly studied in behavioural and neuroendocrine research.
How it works
Binds oxytocin receptors in uterine smooth muscle, mammary tissue, and areas of the central nervous system. Receptor activation increases intracellular calcium signalling, causing uterine contraction and milk ejection. Central oxytocin signalling is associated with bonding, trust, social cognition, and stress modulation.
