Melanotan II

Also known as: MT-2, Melanotan-2

Tanning / MelanocortinGrey areaHalf-life: 2h

Overview

Melanotan II is a synthetic melanocortin analogue commonly discussed for its tanning effects and secondary effects on appetite and libido. It is not an approved medicine in the UK or US and has significant safety concerns around unregulated use, product purity, nausea, flushing, blood pressure changes, and changes in pigmented lesions.

How it works

Acts as a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist, with activity at MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. MC1R activation stimulates eumelanin production in melanocytes, increasing skin pigmentation. MC4R activity may influence appetite, sexual arousal, and autonomic signalling.

Primary uses

  • Melanin stimulation
  • Tanning research
  • Appetite signalling research
  • Melanocortin receptor research

Storage and preparation

Store lyophilised powder at -20°C long term or 2-8°C short term. Protect from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, store at 2-8°C and minimise repeated temperature cycling.

Research vials are commonly reconstituted with bacteriostatic water or sterile water. Add diluent slowly down the vial wall and gently swirl. Do not shake. Concentration depends on vial strength and intended research protocol.
